#12 Making the monsters

Here’s a trick to get some treats

One of the tricks of Halloween, is being someone or something else. The scarier the better, and the less they can tell its you the better! Here I have compiled what I could think of to help you with simple prosthetics all the way to making your own Bald cap, and full head mold as well as special make-up FX. There’s some pretty creepy things and if you watch the SyFy tv show Face-off You might get some ideas of how to create details with just regular make up alone

The Amature MASTER!

For as far as I can rememberwhich was since at least high school, I’ve been able to freak out friends, co-workers and others.
I did a make-up sort of inspired from Face-off it was supposed to be burns, missing skin etc. (I was a zombie soldier. A friend saw the pic & wants me to do their make-up this year!

I’ve gone to school on Halloween when we were NOT allowed to dress up (& if we did would be suspended) but STILL did anyway but in a way you may not notice right away. I made it look like I slit my throat & wrists no one other than my then best friend noticed. She grabbed my arm & said what did you do?!!? She really thought I had tried to slit my wrist to the point that it at least looked like a bloody sore or bruise.

Another time, when I graduated high school & was in a new neighborhood I scared the well…. I swear the person peed their pants! They ran back in the house when they saw me!! I was supposed to be a dead Hockey player complete with CCM equipment bag (for the small accessories pucks, gloves etc) as my treats bag also hockey stick, a jersey and gave myself a black eye using regular every day make-up (eyeshadow) a ‘puck’ in the eye (well in the eye of my Glow in the Dark friday the 13th mask), a missing tooth or 2, & scar as far as I remember BUT what must have scared the person is the way I tried to make what looked like maggots & decaying skin… that trick is my own and I’d have to try again & see how it looks before I give away my secret.

I haven’t made my own prosthetics yet, though I would like to try a couple of simple things. I will also try that one day, but I’m not sur if that will be for this Halloween. (I already have a few costume ideas set up for the next couple of years! (YES I’m THAT into it) It just depends if I can fit into a certain someone’s Army pants to do this years! otherwise we will save it for next (which by then I better have lost enough weight by)

I also watch the show Face off on the Syfy channel to try and learn some tricks and get ideas of how to use different stuff, for instance… Fishnets or that shower puff netting, works good for making the look of scales!

The Basics

Depending on what you are going to be… You will need some form of make-up kit (some of which you can find cheap at stores like CVS etc. You know the ones with the Black tooth crayon, Black or white (aka Clown make up) face paint sometimes they have a few different colored ‘crayon’s in it some sort of

my true self

‘sponge’

Stipple sponge is great for making beard stubble

wedge foam make up sponges are great for blending (plus soft if you have sensitive skin)

If you are serious about your Halloween make-up get a face painting brush set

Check out the Videos below for How To’s for a variety of things. Including making your own mold of a face, etc.

as for other basic needs… if you want to make your own mold to make prosthetics & full mask… You will need either molding clay that doesn’t harden (but if it falls or you squeeze may ruin your mold) or the stuff that hardens when you bake it. After your Mold is shaped (& if needed hardened) use foam latex or the latex ‘flesh’ like I noted here and spread a thin layer on, you may need a few layers so let sit to dry (even when it’s dry it may feel sticky) wait about 5-15 minutes between each layer to be sure (or in front of a fan) & spread up to 8-10 layers. After the last one dries, put some powder on top to take away the stickiness.. baby powder is fine.

If any of the prosthetics are going to go over someone;s eyebrows, use vaseline so it will come off easier (if you apply it directly)

If you are not sure what items you will need you can ask me & I’ll help! I’ll be doing make up for a friend or 2 this year besides mine of course!

REMEMBER

Sometimes Less REALLY is more

(sometimes when you have ‘more’ it makes what you’ve done look fake)

Try experimenting before Halloween with any FX make-up etc.

especially preparing (making) any prosthetics or especially FULL masks yourself.

Video How Tos

I will also see if I can find how to make your own at home prosthetics. (esp. if you don’t have all the machines Molds etc the Make-up artist ahve at their disposal…Plus.. not all of us have time for that let alone room)

I will make note on the Retractable fangs, they are not realistic as the caps, and they easily fall out when you ‘fang out’. They are not worth ANY amount of money. I’ve seen them for $15 & more I got mine (same kind) for under $10 (between $5 & & i think)

this is the Supply list for at home prosthetics    If you want to see more from those whose videos are featured here Silvia
I will get them posted asap but there’s a lot I thought would be helpful  so I am just posting the site I originally had this ‘tutorial’  http://zodiacimmortal.hubpages.com/hub/halloween-make-up-effects

I’m not really into ‘reality’ show or competition ones but Face-off is MUST SEE tv for me!

I love watching how the artists put their creations together & only WISH I had a workshop with at least the supplies, if not certain machines.. (like that suction one that you can make many molds out of one.)

My Fave Face off Contestant over all and was my #1 to win season 1 & did!

I’ve watched it since the first season and in the first episode I always pick at least one who I favor, and as the season goes on I may pick another 1 or 2 depending how many may impress me.

Connor McCullagh was in the first season as well equally talented Tate .

Connor wins season 1 of Face-off

Connor worked on The Hunger Games movie, on Vampire Diaries during 2009 for 4 episodes, Jackass the movie for make-up department On Special Effects for Freddy Vs. Jason, Tooth & Nail, Children of the Corn 5 as well as other well known & not so movies & Tv series and other departments like visual effects & costume & wardrobe.

Tate was also in season 1 and he is in the current season (sept 2013) he makes some creepy scary stuff So He BETTER win this time

Tate was also in season 1 and was also on the sept 2013 season. He makes some creepy scary stuff , sadly he again did not win.

Tate Steinsiek worked on Special Effects for Piranahconda (as well as being a 2nd unit or assistant director. He also worked FX on The Amazing Spider-man as well as with the make-up department. In Piranahconda he was also one of the actors (as well as in a few other movies as an extra) particularly as a thug (ok hoping Syfy or Chiller puts that on again soon) Director, producer (&) or writer for 1-2 movie shorts. Tate’s Spotlight challenge gallery (season 1)

There have also be a few memorable creations not only by these two but by the others throughout the years. (Wish I could find the others) however below are just a few pictures have found of my favorites. (sadly not even one from each season, & none of Connor’s or Tate’s , but then I might need a separate gallery for theirs possibly each)

I’m not sure if they still have some make-up tips up from contestants but I know they had it in a past season or 2, but so far I have yet to find it.

Another one of my favorites has been Roy (Season 3 Creation Gallerythe past 2 seasons, Laura as well comes out with some very creative stuff. I know only one can win but (instead of having had Vets vs newbies why not an all vets or have 1 vet winner & 1 newbie winner)

(If you do not see a caption under the picture just hover over it)
